Tell me a bit about your background

Andrew

I started as first year apprentice 9 years ago and now I have the chair! The business promotes growth and development of their people.

TOTM

Andrew, where are you from?

Andrew

I am from Sydney.

TOTM

What attracted you to Audi and to a career in Automotive?

Andrew

I am passionate about motorcars and Audi is an attractive brand – it comes with a lifestyle.

TOTM

What does ‘comes with a lifestyle’ mean?

Andrew

There is a certain association of successfulness with the brand.

TOTM

So has the brand changed in the last 9 years?

Andrew

IA few years ago, when I started, when you said, ‘I work for Audi’ – it could have been confused for a supermarket. Now it is immediately recognized as a quality job when you say, “ I work for Audi” – and many great conversations start this way!

TOTM

What makes Audi Centre Sydney special?

Andrew

It’s a real team environment. We have a culture of ‘work hard and play hard’.

We’ve expanded from 19 to 56 bays with capacity for another 18 or 19 bays.

This is the 3rd move that Audi Centre Sydney have done, and I have been here for every one.

TOTM

I’d imagine that one of your challenges is getting good people on each hoist?

Andrew

That’s why Techs on the Move is such an important source for us. They provide technicians that are already Audi qualified – which is a rarity in Australia. The brand is more established in Europe – so are the technicians. In Australia, Audi is still an up and comer. As an example of the quality of Tech on the Move sourced guys – we have recently promoted three to Team Leader. Given the size of the workshop – we split into teams – 8 groups – and 3 have earned that position.

TOTM

You’ve taken advantage of what we call ‘Plug and Play’ – technicians on working holiday visas – who then stay. Tell us about that.

Andrew

Guys have come on working holiday visa. They come with tools – they get to prove themselves. They perform and we sponsor them to stay. Gavin and Techs on the Move makes it easy for us and for the techs.

TOTM

What makes the area around Audi Centre Sydney great?

Andrew

Our Service Centre is in residential and commercial complex: shopping mall below and apartments above. In such a high-density place – 10 minutes from beach and city – no real need to have a car. Some of the guys come over and literally move into an apartment above the dealership.

TOTM

What is your favorite thing about Sydney?

Andrew

My favorite thing about Sydney – is the pace. It’s a fast moving city.

TOTM

You’ve seen other Audi centres around the world?

Andrew

I’ve been to Germany and seen how they run it. Their approach is a bit clinical. We ‘Aussie it up’ a little bit. We can still be professional and clinical, but we enjoy a barbecue with the team. We socialize as well.

TOTM

Audi Centre Sydney is pretty impressive. How does is compare with facilities in Europe?

Andrew

This is the best facility in the world. We have representatives coming from UAE today to help them build and run their new centres to our standards. Our service reception process is world-standard. We check in our customers with i-pads – it’s seamless.

TOTM

Outside of Sydney – what are your favourite experiences in Australia?

Andrew

Sky diving in Wollongong! (Costal town about 1½ hours south of Sydney Oh, and I had an Audi that I drag race – at Eastern Creek (raceway 1 hour out of the City).

We have a dyno here. We run the cars up here – we have a passion for horsepower. We’ve had an RS6 make over 450 horsepower at the wheels – a standard Audi!
